Whales conservation community meets in Santo Domingo

The Third Edition of the Humpback Whale World Congress (HWWC) will be happening 6 to 10 March 2023. Whale experts from around the world are coming for the conference at the Renaissance Jaragua Hotel in Santo Domingo.

The Humpback Whale World Congress aims to advance scientific inquiry and conservation efforts on the humpback whale in their feeding ground, their breeding site and their migration path. The congress brings together researchers, scientists and organizations working in the various fields of research and conservation, promoting the exchange of expertise and partnerships.

The HWWC helps to create links, share experiences and build common projects.

In the online presentation of the event, HWWC points to the Dominican Republic as a model for humpback whale (Megaptera Novaeangliae) conservation. The country is a global hotspot of terrestrial and marine biodiversity, where most of the humpback whale population from the North Atlantic migrate once a year.

In the Dominican Republic, from early January, they can be observed mainly in the Silver Bank, Navidad Bank and Samana Bay areas, with higher densities in February and early March, then tapering off until early April.

The Dominican Republic declared the Silver Bank (Banco de la Plata) area as a « National Sanctuary in 1986, making it the first protected area in the North Atlantic region for humpback whales and other fragile or threatened species.

The theme of this edition will be the blue economy for sustainable development.

A whale-watching trip by Moto Marina Tours for participants is scheduled for the end of the congress.

Organizers are Cetamada, Fundemar, Anamar and the Embassy of France.
