Wife of La Romana mayor expected to be new mayor

The way politics work in the Dominican Republic, the wife of a removed mayor can get the job. While the present La Romana mayor is ordered to prison, the mayor’s office may remain within the family, N Digital reports.

The ruling of the Second Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice that sentences La Romana Mayor Juan Antonio (Tony) Adames to two years in prison has not yet been executed. If the sentence is implemented, the administration of the city hall can order the city administration to stay in the family. Adames’ wife, Hilda Miliza López Núñez (Milly Núñez), ran on the same ticket with him and was elected the deputy mayor. By law, the succession of command corresponds to her.

As reported, the Council of Aldermen of the City Council of La Romana must proceed, in accordance with Law 176-07, on the National District and the Municipalities, to convene an extraordinary session to accept the mandate of the Supreme Court of Justice and remove Tony Adames and in his place, place the mother of his two children.

The sentence against Tony Adames also contemplates a compensation of RD$4 million in favor of the sculptor Luis Castillo.

The mayor had been sentenced by a court of La Romana in 2018 after failing to honor the payment of sculptures of ballplayers, made by Castillo that were placed in the city’s central park.

Despite being convicted, the Social Christian Reformist Party leader, Tony Adames, was reelected as mayor in the 2020 elections.

The sentence of two years in prison and the payment of four million pesos was ratified by the Court of Appeals of San Pedro de Macoris, in March 2022.

N Digital reports that La Romana Mayor Tony Adames’ legal kicking and screaming came to an end, with the thing irrevocably judged, when on December 28, 2022, the SCJ ratified the ruling.

The SCJ rejected the appeal filed by Tony Adames against the criminal sentence number 334-2022-SSEN-00115.

The mayor also has other cases pending before the courts for allegations of municipal administrative corruption.
