On the occasion of the International Day of Women on 6 March 2023, hundreds of Dominican women used the pedestrian street of Calle El Conde in the Colonial City to as a venue to protest that legislators have not included the three grounds for abortion in the Penal Code bill. On the contrary, the bill only authorizes an abortion, and this with rigorous red tape, in the case the life of the mother is in danger.
Women groups on Saturday, 4 March 2023, complained there has been complicity of the Abinader administration and legislators with the conservative circles. When opposition, party members of the ruling PRM had supported the three grounds.
Protestors called for more actions against discrimination and more policies to benefit women and reduce gender violence.
