President Luis Abinader is headed to Miami for the throwing of the first ball in the 11 March 2023 game at the loanDepot Park. Team DR will first play Venezuela in the 5th World Baseball Classic. The Dominican Republic is playing in Pool D against Israel, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela.
The games schedule is:
Saturday, 11 March: Dominican Republic vs. Venezuela (7pm)
Monday, 13 March: Dominican Republic vs. Nicaragua (12pm)
Tuesday, 14 March: Israel vs. Dominican Republic (7pm)
Wednesday, 15 March: Puerto Rico vs. Dominican Republic (7pm)
Each team meets once in the first round. The DR needs to be one of two top teams by winning percentage, eight in total, to move on to the quarterfinals. The four quarterfinal winners head to the semis.
Japan was the first-ever tournament winner, beating Cuba in the final to capture the title in 2006, and winning again in 2009.
Dominican Republic went undefeated in 2013 and remains the only team to do so. The Dominican team attributed the win to “platano power.”
In 2017, Team USA won for the first time. The tournament was scheduled to take place in 2021 but was postponed due to Covid-19.
All the games will be broadcast on local television. Pío Deportes Radio TV will broadcast the games as of 8 March on Coral 39 and TeleAntillas (Channel 2).
