Father of murdered pastor sent to jail

Alternate judge Carol Heredia of the Permanent Attention Office of Santo Domingo West ordered three months of preventive custody in Najayo Jail to Mariano Antonio Muñoz Concepción, Muñoz Concepción is the father of newly weds, 32-year old Christian pastor Elizabeth Muñoz who together with her 35-year old husband Joel Diaz was shot by National Police agents in Villa Altagracia in March 2021.

Mariano Muñoz is charged with attempted murder. He was arrested accused of importing a AM-15 and a XD-9 in two tanks from United States. The firearms would be to “avenge” the death of his daughter, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Mariano intended to attack the police officers involved in the death of his daughter, and the judges and prosecutors handling the case.

It is recalled that Elizabeth Muñoz was killed along with her husband Joel Diaz in March 2021 in Villa Altagracia, at the hands of police agents who allegedly mistook them for criminals they were chasing.

The Prosecutor’s Office said that Muñoz Concepción alleged that these weapons were bought in a moment of anger to use them in the next hearing of her daughter’s case in Villa Altagracia. The father would have acted in frustration of the lenience he was finding in the prosecutors and judiciary regarding the killing of his daughter.

The death of the young couple caused consternation in the country, which provoked high levels of repudiation on the part of society, for which the then director of the National Police was obliged to suspend the acting agents that same night and place them in the hands of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Two other people were in the back of the vehicle, Ramirez Lamáis, who was injured and Carlos Pérez Báez miraculously escaped unharmed.

The main accused of the killing, coronel César Maríñez Lora was sent to a special police jail in Villa Mella.
