
The Abinader administration said once concluded the government, political parties and civil society pact on Haiti will be taken to international organizations and foreign governments. The document is expected to be a new call for international action regarding the multidimensional crisis in Haiti. The Haitian crisis directly threatens the Dominican Republic, which shares a land border with Haiti.
The second day of talks took place on 8 March 2023 at the Presidential Palace. The leading opposition parties, the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the People’s Force (FP) are not participating. Neither the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD). The president of the PLD is former President Danilo Medina, the president of the FP is former President Leonel Fernandez and the president of the PRD is former Minister of Foreign Relations under the Danilo Medina administration, Miguel Vargas Maldonado.
Government and participating organizations maintain the call to PLD, FP and the PRD to join the dialogue.
The document will be delivered by two foreign policy delegations that will travel to the United Nations (UN), the Organization of American States (OAS), the US State Department and the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, to deliver the document and lobby for actions.
The trips will be scheduled for within two months from now, when the pact has been completed and socialized in the Dominican Republic, Ramón Rogelio Genao, of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC); Eddy Olivares, of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and Max Puig, of the Alliance for Democracy (APD) told Diario Libre.
President Luis Abinader, Defense Minister Carlos Luciano Díaz Morfa; Interior & Police Minister Jesús Vásquez and Administrative Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza (Administrative of the Presidency) headed the talks. During the Wednesday session, reportedly four committees were formed to deal with aspects such as foreign policy, border control, migratory policy and the effects of the Haitian crisis on the local economy.
Members of the civil society, such as historians and intellectuals, and delegates of political parties, except for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Dominican Revolutionary Party (PLD) and People’s Force (FP), were integrated.
At the meeting, it was agreed that the committes will be chaired by civil society representatives to depoliticize the issue. The next meeting is set for Wednesday, 15 March 2023.
