Vice President Raquel Peña: Do not let Haiti divide us

Guest speaker at the American Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Vice President Raquel Peña spoke of social peace, women in development and the role of the government as a facilitator of private business. The Vice President is known as the government trouble shooter, with President Luis Abinader many times sending her in to resolve difficult situations.

She stated that social peace is the country’s most important asset. The Vice President highlighted the importance of maintaining the Dominican Republic’s social peace, which has generated confidence in national and foreign investors.

The Vice President said local and international investors know about this social peace, so scarce in these convoluted global times. She called attention to the need for the country to remain united in the face of crucial issues such as the Haitian crisis. Politicians of the leading opposition parties — the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the People’s Force (FP) have not joined the talks at the Presidential Palace for the National Pact on Haiti.

“Social peace is fundamental not only for the success of the present administration. It will also be fundamental for the one that our future governors will wish to have, regardless of the party that will bring them to power. The problem of the permanent and increasingly serious Haitian crisis and the threat that looms over our territory generated by growing and unregularized immigration should not divide us. Much less, in the political class, the business and union sectors, and the intellectual elites,” she stated.

“Let us avoid being divided by the Haitian crisis. If we divide ourselves, we could open the doors to the emergence of extreme political offers, from the right or the left, which could threaten social peace, the most valuable asset we have accumulated during the last six decades”, said the Vice President.

The Vice President was invited to speak on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2023. She highlighted the participation, influence and importance of hundreds of thousands of Dominican women for the development and growth of the national economy, in her speech “Sustainable growth of the Dominican Republic: contributions and leadership of Women.”

Peña spoke about the process of transformation and development that the country has exhibited in recent years, with the special support of women in all aspects of the economy and the government’s interest in increasing growth opportunities for Dominican women.
