The Councillors Board of the municipality of La Romana replaced the imprisoned mayor, Tony Adames with his wife Hilda Miliza López Núñez during a session on 21 March 2023. Adames had chosen his wife to be his deputy mayor when he was elected in 2020.
Mili Núñez, as she is known, took office after the mayor-elect, Juan Antonio Adames (Tony), was imprisoned following the ratification of the Court of Appeals of San Pedro de Macorís, for the case brought against him by the sculptor Luis Alberto Castillo, for work done and not paid.
Municipal Law 176-07 establishes in Art. 63 that in the temporary absence of the mayor the deputy mayor will perform the duties. Nevertheless, the same article limits these to the management of ordinary matters and specifies that the substitute cannot make or revoke appointments or delegations, as well as to make contracts that are not strictly necessary for the normal functioning of the administration and municipal services.
