
The Dr. Hugo Mendoza Pediatric Hospital (HPHM), a public hospital, is the first institution in the country twice to receive the Ibero-American Quality Award – gold medal.
This world-renowned recognition, awarded by the Ibero-American Foundation for Quality (Fundibeq), was presented during the 28th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, held in Santo Domingo, 24-25 March 2023.
In the presence of Felipe VI, King of Spain; President of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader and Juan Luis Martín Cuesta, executive director of the Ibero-American Foundation for Quality presented the gold award to the general director of the medical center, Dr. Dhamelisse Then Vanderhorst. She was accompanied by the executive director of the National Health Service (SNS), Dr. Mario Lama. The hospital is part of the SNS public hospital network.
The hospital won the award in an assessment that covered hospitals from 22 Ibero-American region countries. The evaluation studied the evolution of the health care centers over the past three years, the results and the current vision framed in the strategic plan, aspects such as the development of people.
The evaluation team highlighted the level of excellence achieved by the Dominican pediatrics hospital, which is based on a model of excellence that also articulates practices of humanization, digital transformation, human talent management and sustainable development objectives, and the hospital’s transcendental role in the management of services in favor of the community.
The hospital has been characterized as a model of excellence, innovation, transparency, research and humanization, which makes it a milestone in public administration.
According to Dr. Then says her team implements quality excellence models in management, such as the CAF Model (Common Assessment Framework), supervised by the Ministry of Public Administration (MAP) and the Ibero-American Model of Excellence in management of Fundibeq.
The hospital has health research and vaccine research centers, and units for patients with Down syndrome. It offers services of adolescent care, endoscopy, oncology, day hospital, neonatal intensive care, pediatric intensive care, dentistry, audiology and children’s gender for the detention and treatment of violence, impacting the lives of users and their families in the area of health care.
