Low pressure trough douses holiday weekend

A large area of low pressure brought lots of rains and thunderstorms to all of the eastern part of the Dominican Republic as well as major portions of the Northeast and the Central Cibao valley over the Easter holidays.

In fact, what seemed to be a six-province warning issued by the Center for Emergency Operations (COE), turned into a 17 province warning with four provinces under yellow warnings for flooding and landslides. Samana, Hato Mayor, La Vega and Sanchez Ramirez are under this yellow alert.

The COE is also urging small boats to pay attention to the marine bulletins issued by the National Meteorological Office regarding the conditions in the open sea and along the coastline.

Flooding and rising waters combined with with high winds have caused at least one loss of life in Bonao, and serious damages to several houses in San Juan de la Maguana.

The Weather Office says that the rains will continue to affect most of the national territory. 17 provinces are under weather alerts for possible flooding. Yellow alerts have been issued for Samaná, Hato Mayor, Sánchez Ramírez (Cotuí) and La Vega. Green alerts are in place for María Trinidad Sánchez (Nagua), Santiago, Monseñor Nouel (Bonao), Duarte (San Francisco de Macorís), Santo Domingo province, Puerto Plata, Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo), El Seibo, Monte Plata, La Altagracia (Higuey), Greater Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macorís and Espaillat (Moca).
