
Vice President Raquel Peña returned to Santo Domingo after the last stretch of a nine-day trip to Asia that took her to Japan and South Korea. She was in South Korea for visits with top government officials, non-governmental organizations and business people from 5 to 8 April 2023 following a first stop after her travels to Japan (31 March to 5 April).
In South Korea, she met with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo. The opening of talks for a free trade agreement between both countries and collaboration in energy, infrastructure and transport was discussed.
Economy Minister Pável Isa, Energy & Mines Minister Antonio Almonte, Industry & Commerce Minister Víctor Bisonó, and Pro Dominicana director, Biviana Riveiro traveled from Santo Domingo with the Vice President. Federico Cuello, ambassador of the Dominican Republic in South Korea, coordinated the visit of the official government mission.
In South Korea, the Vice President visited the headquarters of Samsung where she was received by TM Roch, president and head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. Commenting on the meeting, the Vice President said the discussions were about renewable energies and the global electronics consumer sector. The Dominican Republic is a major importer of Samsung consumer products. She was accompanied by Manuel Corripio, vice president of the Grupo Corripio, the representative of the firm in the Dominican Republic; and Avelino Rodríguez, president of the Dominican-Korean Chamber of Commerce.
She also met with Jaehoon (Jay) Chang, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. The Dominican Republic is a major importer of Hyundai vehicles.
The Vice President also met Hee-sung Yoon, president of The Export-Import Bank of Korea.
During her visit in Seoul, the Vice President met with Hyeong Jung Yoon, president of the Korea Airports Corporation, a government division. The South Korean government agency is already collaborating on the Pedernales international airport.
She met with Youngmi Cho, the head of the global and communications affairs for the International Vaccine Institute. IVI works to discover, develop and deliver safe, effective and affordable vaccines for global public health. Vice President Peña led the Abinader administration’s Covid-19 task force since August 2020.
In Seoul, she met with Ban Ki-moon, the former secretary general of the United Nations (2007-2016), in his capacity as president of the board of the Global Green Growth Institute that promotes economic development and sustainable growth. The Vice President delivered a letter of intention for the country to be part of the organization.
