Vice President Raquel Peña visits Japan

Vice President Raquel Peña visited Japan 31 March to 5 April where she had an intense program with activities seeking to strengthen relations between both countries. In Japan she met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and expressed her appreciation for his words of praise for President Luis Abinader and the interest in continuing to strengthen business ties between both countries. She also met with speaker of the House of Representatives, Hosoda Hiroyuki, and the Minister of State Shunsuke Takei.

At the start of her visit, the Vice President toured the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and deposited a floral wreath in memory of the victims of the atomic bomb in 1950.

She also visited Aikawa, where the largest number of Dominican migrants live, where she met with the Dominican expats. In Aikawa, she was received by Mayor Yutaka Onozawa.

In Japan, the Dominican Embassy organized a reception with government and business representatives to introduce them to Dominican gastronomy, culture and explain why the Dominican Republic is a strategic destination for Japanese investment.

The Vice President highlighted the encounter was a time to highlight the sociocultural and business ties that have united the two countries for the past 90 years. She spoke of the dynamic Japanese descendants that live in the country. She met with representatives of the community of Dominican expats in Tokyo.

In a tweet on the visit, the Vice President said that for the Dominican Republic, it is an honor to have such an important partner as Japan, a nation that has shown its support on various issues and wishes to contribute to development, peace and democracy.

The Vice President met with Akihiko Tanaka, president of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to express the interest of the agency in continuing to collaborate with the Dominican government on sustainable development projects.

The Vice President said that the meeting with Japanese university authorities strengthened the ties of collaboration, so that more Dominican students can take advantage of the scholarships, exchanges and research programs offered by this country.

She met with the president of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Tadashi Maeda, and the president of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO), Masataka Shimizu.

Other important meetings held by the Dominican Vice President were with representatives of the Japan Business Federation (KEIDANREN) and with the governor of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Hayashi Nobumitsu.

She was also invited to throw the first ball by Hajime Matsuda, president of the Hiroshima Toyo Carp, a professional baseball team that has several Dominicans on its roster.

Throughout her stay in Japan, the Vice President was accompanied by Economy Minister Pavel Isa Contreras; Industry & Commerce Minister Víctor (Ito) Bisonó; Biviana Riveiro of Pro Dominicana; and Dominican ambassador Robert Takata; Miguel Núñez, ambassador in Special Mission, and her press and security team.
