
Around six million people left where they lived to vacation in beach, mountain, or for family reunion vacations during the Easter Week long weekend, according to the fourth on the Easter holiday issued by the Center for Emergency Operations (COE). The number of domestic travelers is around the same amount of people that mobilize for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) published its final bulletin #4 with the Easter Week Safety Operation results. The COE reports 30 deaths during the peak days of the Easter holiday, Holy Thursday and Easter Sunday (6 to 9 April 2023). The total of 30 deaths compares to 34 deaths recorded for the same period in 2022, or 11.8% more than in 2022. 26 persons died in traffic accidents and four drowned.
The director of the COE, Juan Manuel Méndez said that there were 164 traffic accidents, with 227 people affected. Of these 164 road accidents, 124 involved motorcycles for an astronomical 75.6%. And of the 26 deaths in traffic accidents, 18 correspond to motorcyclists for 69.2%.
In last year’s operation there were 187 traffic accidents and this year there were 164, for a reduction of 13.7%.
Mendez said that in 2022, 257 people were affected and/or injured by traffic accidents and this year there were 227, for a reduction of 12.7%.”
The provinces that registered the most cases were: Santo Domingo 22%, Puerto Plata 12%, La Vega 16%, and San Cristóbal 11%.
Of the total number of deaths inside and outside the operation, 65% occurred between 3pm and 10pm.
Likewise, during the security operation, 4,870 road assistance services were provided; 2,780 medical assistance services were provided; nine people were rescued from seaside resorts and 34 lost minors were handed over to their parents, for a total of 7,693 assistance services.
Méndez said that, according to data provided by the National Health Service (SNS), in the period between Holy Thursday and Easter Sunday, 419 people were treated for alcohol intoxication; of these intoxications, 27 were minors between the ages of 3 and 17 years old. Also, 170 people were treated for food intoxication.
