The Ministry of Tourism confirmed the peak of hotel occupancy for the Easter long weekend happened in the Punta Cana area. For Easter, schools are closed for a week, the weather is good and an estimated 6 million domestic travelers hit the roads for beach and mountain destinations and for family reunions.
Reports are that resorts in Punta Cana were at 95% occupancy. The long lines of returning traffic on Sunday was clear evidence of the thousands that left the cities for outings at the eastern beaches.
The Ministry of Tourism pointed out that thousands also traveled to Juan Dolio and Guayacanes areas, and enjoyed the new government faciliities. Likewise, vacationers also enjoyed the renovations at the Los Patos, El Quemaito and Saladilla in Barahona. Las Terrenas and Las Galeras in Samana also saw season highs in the numbers of vacationers. In Barahona, nevertheless, the enthusiasm of the vacationers was dampened when a bush fire caused a major smoke that affected the beach of Saladilla.
Tourism Minister David Collado reportedly visited beaches in La Romana and was also seen at Las Marías in Bahoruco in the southwest. Reports are that he also visited the beach of Los Patos and El Quemaito in Barahona to supervise the newly refurbished beach-goer facilities.
