US Deputy Minister Wendy Sherman will use some of her time in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, 12 April 2023 to meet with the Argentinean Minister of Economy to discuss Argentinean affairs.

Sherman is later scheduled to travel to Buenos Aires for the Argentinean-US agenda, a follow-up after the 29 March 2023 meeting between US President Joe Biden and Argentina President Alberto Fernandez at the White House.

La Nacion in Argentina reports that Sherman will have an agenda focused on three areas where the United States has shown special interest in the “strategic” link with Argentina: gas, lithium and food.

Before arriving in Buenos Aires, Sherman will meet with Economy Minister Sergio Massa in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Massa is scheduled to make a stop on his trip to Washington, D.C. to see Biden’s official. Afterward, he reportedly will continue on to the United States to participate in the International Monetary Fund assembly and World Bank activities.

La Nación reports that Sherman’s trip to Argentina is the first concrete follow-up to last month’s bilateral meeting between Alberto Fernandez and Biden at the White House, in which Fernandez conveyed to Biden the need to “build a bridge that will allow us to reach next year” and spend the coming months with “more tranquility.”

El Nuevo Diario in Santo Domingo reports that Sherman will be accompanied by the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Ricardo Zúñiga, and the Deputy Director of the National Security Council, Michel Pyle.

As part of her 10-14 April 2023 tour, Sherman is traveling to New Orleans (USA), Santo Domingo and Buenos Aires.

In Santo Domingo on Wednesday, 12 April 2023, Sherman is scheduled to meet with President Luis Abinader and Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Álvarez, among other authorities, as well as with members of the Dominican civil society.

Haiti is a main topic on the agenda to be covered by Dominican officials with the visiting Deputy Secretary of State. The United States has been a strong advocate for human rights of the undocumented Haitian population in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic has been heavily burdened with the demands for social services and jobs by the Haitian population that increasingly migrates fleeing from the multidimensional crisis in the neighboring country.
