Several children were impacted when a large truck collided into another and sent the truck into the playground of a public school on the Sanchez to Samana road. As reported, several children died when the truck crashed the Las Garitas public school, Escuela Obdulia Rodríguez. The accident occurred when a truck driver lost control and impacted the school on Tuesday, 11 April 2023.
Hoy newspaper reported that the two deceased children were identified as Nahiolett Michel de la Cruz and Nayelis Diaz Andujar, both four years old. The injured are Angel Mendez, 42, Dariel Bueno, 28, and Nicover Lina, 14, from Samaná, Mabel de la Cruz, 25, from San Francisco de Macoris, Duarte province, as well as a three-year old, resident of Nagua, Maria Trinidad Sanchez province.
The accident victims were taken to the Alberto Gautreaux municipal hospital. The five injured were transferred to the San Vicente de Paúl Hospital in San Francisco de Macorís, Duarte province. Their condition is not known.
Residents of Las Garitas asked the authorities to obligate heavy trucks to transit on the Majagual road. They said that in the past, heavy vehicles used to travel on that road but that due to the works being carried out by the Ministry of Public Works, the trucks are now using the Cabeza de Toro Las Garitas road where two educational centers operate.
El Dia updated the information reporting that three girls and the driver of one of the vehicles had died. According to reports, the accident occurred after 4pm on Tuesday, 11 April 2023 when the brakes of one of the trucks failed and it hit another truck, sending this into the playground of the Las Garitas Basic School, in the Sanchez 14-04 educational district.
The Samana accident occurred shortly after the tragedy of five in Monseñour Nouel. In that road accident, at least five persons died, including three children in a traffic accident between two SUVs at the dawn of Tuesday, 11 April 2023 in Monseñor Nouel province on the Piedra Blanca-Bonao highway section. Fe Maria Suarez and her two grandchildren, Dilan and David Marte of five and seven years old died in the accident. Diario Libre says preliminary reports indicate the accident was caused by the speeding of the also deceased Santa Yaniry Villanueva of 43 years. Villanueva was accompanied by her child, who also died.
