Dr. Martin Ortiz Garcia, director of the National Health Service (SNS), described the San Lorenzo de Los Mina Hospital as a center of “high complexity.” The hospital handles many patients, especially Haitian foreigners who he said usually arrive with many serious complications.
Ortíz García seconded the version of the director of the Hospital San Lorenzo de Los Mina, Leonardo Aquino who had already explained that among the 34 deaths registered in the medical center during February 2023 there were many caused by an outbreak of infection.
According to what Ortiz Garcia explained to journalists, an infected newborn was admitted to the neonatal ward, which caused the others to become infected and previously die.
Ortiz informed that the infant can contract the “infection from a germ that has infected a child who is admitted from another hospital or a baby born inside that medical center from a mother who has a “urine infection or other type of infection”.
Regarding the deaths, Leonardo Aquino told N Investigacion Periodistica that of the 34 perinatal deaths, six suffered from cardiopathies that were practically incompatible with life. Some of them were premature, very extreme and were of foreign nationalities that usually come without prenatal check-up.
The. hospital is receiving more cases as the healthcare situation in Haiti has been worsening due to gang control of Haitian institutions.
