DR signs deals with airlines to boost Canadian travel

Tourism Minister David Collado was in Canada to participate in the Dominican Republic Trade Show. He took advantage of the event to sign agreements with several airlines to boost travel to the Dominican Republic. The initiatives to promote more Canadian tourism compensates for the downturn in travel from Europe, impacted by the Ukrainian War.

Of the total of 7,165,387 from January to December 2022 by air during 2022, 15.87% came from Canada, second only to the United States, which accounted for 32.39%. And in January and February of this year, 278,087 Canadians arrived in the country, 21% of the total from America.

Hoy newspaper reports that Tourism Minister Collado signed agreements with Sunwing Airlines, Air Transat and Air Canada, the main airlines bringing tourists from Canada to the DR. He said the agreements guarantee the arrival of one million tourists from Canada this year.

In January and February of this year, 39% of Canadian tourists came by Air Transat; 24% by Sunwing Airlines and 17% by Air Canada.

Of the total arrivals, reportedly 41% live in Ontario, 41 in Quebec, 3% in Alberta, 2% in Nova Scotia and 7% in other Canadian provinces.

Sunwing Airlines has operations impacting different destinations, Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata and Romana. David Collado and Erick Rodriguez, the airline’s vice president of product development, signed the agreement.

Air Transat is Canada’s leading vacation airline. The agreement was signed between Collado and Brenda Mclnerney, product director.

Air Canada is Canada’s national airline and the agreement was signed between Collado and Diana Rodriguez, Air Canada’s representative.
