The Ministry of Education (Minerd) has taken at least two steps to reduce the number of vacant teaching positions at the public schools at the present time.
One of the first moves is to ensure that educators who passed the required testing procedure, but who were not employed, retain their eligibility for another year.
In many cases teachers would not take up positions in areas removed from their place of residence. And that is the second step taken last week: the Ministry announced that it would select candidates by academic area and geographical location per the needs as reported by an on-going survey of the situation.
This selection process will focus on specific areas, such as mathematics and specific geographical areas. The selection process will not be nationwide but will be area-specific as the survey reveals the needs of each part of the country.
For example, in San Juan de la Maguana there were over 850 vacancies that needed to be filled in San Juan and in Elias Piña. Many teachers were able to find a spot, and a majority of the positions were filled.
However there are still vacancies in some of the more remote areas of these two provinces, especially in Math and Languages. Although the Ministry has employed 24,500 new teachers and administrators since the 2021 selection process, many vacancies remain due to the construction of new and larger schools, retirements, and resignations.
