Customs agency directors to meet in DR

Three major events will bring Customs agencies experts in the Americas, Spain and Portugal to the Dominican Republic this coming 15 to 19 May 2023. The events will be held in in eastern Punta Cana. The Customs agency directors will meet to identify common opportunities and challenges, explore best practices and share experiences in the modernization of customs and logistics systems.

The Abinader administration is spearheading efforts at making the Dominican Republic the prime logistics hub in the Caribbean. Major efforts are in place to offer major logistics services in Santo Domingo in the southcentral, Punta Cana in the East and next in Manzanillo (in the Northwest).

Eduardo Sanz Lovatón, director general of Customs of the Dominican Republic, said the main players in customs management in the Americas, Spain and Portugal, are coming for the event. He said they will be sharing concerns, innovations, opportunities for knowledge exchange and promoting public-private partnerships, to strengthen the transport of goods.

The events are:
The 43rd Meeting of National Directors for the Multilateral Agreement on Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the National Customs Agencies of Latin America, Spain and Portugal (COMALEP), on 15-16 May 2023.

The 3rd Joint Customs Forum: Regional Private Sector Group will take place on 17 May 2023 to explore opportunities for alliances and joint identification of solutions between the private sector and customs.

The 25th Regional Conference of Customs Directors General (CRDGA 2023) will be held from from 18 to 19 May 2023 to discuss issues of concern to Customs administrations, based on the World Customs Organization’s Strategic Plan and Agenda, in the area of the organization’s internal governance and the priorities of its members for the six regional vice-presidencies around the world.

The conclave will also serve to strengthen relations between the different countries, in addition to sharing experiences to streamline customs procedures, maximize the competitiveness of nations and find ways to strengthen security controls in the various customs ports.

In a press release, the Presidency says the global customs directors meeting will also serve as an opportunity for exchange among the 33 members of the Regional Vice-Presidency of the Americas and the Caribbean, the executing arm of the World Customs Organization (WCO).
