Internal conflicts at the Chamber of Accounts

Differences among the members of the Chamber of Accounts, in charge of auditing government entities, have marked the developments at that important entity since the board was chosen by the Senate on 13 April 2021. The board members are Janel Andres Ramirez, Elsa Maria Catano, Tomasina Tolentino, Mario Arturo Fernandez and Elsa Maria Peña.

Now the Senate says it could review the board and may select new members. The Senate is able to do so after two years.

Meanwhile, the president of the Chamber of Accounts, Janel Ramirez Sanchez says decisions already taken in the Chamber are overriden by the plenary. Staff he has appointed have not been hired.

Interviewed for El Dia on Telesistema (Channel 11), Ramirez says that he is a victim of what he described as the curse of the Chamber of Accounts whereby the institution is ungovernable.

He said that the Chamber of Accounts had committed to carry out 100 audits a year and has but delivered seven. He described himself as a “trusted prisoner” of the plenary, and said he has had to do things against his will. He was critical: “We cannot continue doing the same thing and expect different results.”
