The Ministry of Interior and Police spearheaded programs to revamp headquarters of governors in the provinces. Investigative journalist Alicia Ortega says that the engineers were handpicked, the projects were handled exclusively by the Ministry of Interior & Police, and many of the engineers assigned several of the renovations were native of the province of María Trinidad Sanchez. Minister of Interior & Police is from María Trinidad Sanchez province.
In the investigative report aired on Monday, 1 May 2023, Ortega pinpoints evidence of would be corruption or wasteful spending in the discretionary contracting and lack of accountability for the works carried out.
Ortega explains that for some quirk in the government system, governor spending is exempt from procurement and accountability regimes (Libre Derecho a la Información).
