Santo Domingo mayor Carolina Mejía meets US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Denver

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken met during the Summit of Cities in Denver, Colorado for photo-taking with four women mayors. One of the four women mayors was Santo Domingo’s Carolina Mejía, mayor of the National District, the capital of the Dominican Republic.

“At the Summit of Cities, I emphasized the critical role that local leaders play in closing the gender gap in access to opportunity and decision-making power. Fortunately, they are leading a positive change in this area in their cities,” shared Blinken.

The four women participants were: Carolina Mejía, Mayor of the National District, Dominican Republic; Claudia López, Mayor of Bogotá, Colombia; Katie Rosenberg of Wausau, Wisconsin; Regina Romero, from Tucson Arizona and Lily Mae, from Fremont California.

The event focused on:
Smart Cities: Strategies for Achieving Smart Urban Growth
Mobility and Transportation: Complete Streets: Aligning Infrastructure Investment and Sustainable Development Agendas
Migration: Create Welcoming Communities for Migrants

Carolina Mejía was elected Mayor of the National District in the August 2020 election. She has not confirmed whether she will run again. Polls indicate she would likely win a second term if she decided to opt for reelection. She is the secretary general of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).
