The Ride of the Butterflies set for 3 June

Around 1,500 horse riders from all around the Dominican Republic will gather on Saturday, 3 June 2023 in Hermanas Mirabal province for the Cabalgata de las Mariposas. The ride is in its 11th year and honors the three Mirabal sisters – Minerva, Patria and Maria Teresa — murdered in 1960 during the Trujillo dictatorship. The ride seeks to raise awareness for the need for “non-violence against women.” The United Nations commemorates on 25th of November, the International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women to mark the assassination of the three Dominican women.

The meeting point is at the Casa Museo from 9am and the ride will start at 11am. Riders will cover a distance of 18 kms, starting and finishing at the Casa Museo Hermanas Mirabal in Conuco, a municipality of Salcedo in Hermanas Mirabal province, explains Linabel Gonzalez, executive vice president of the organizing committee of the event.

The route passes through Salcedo city streets, trails, paths and river roads.

The organization dedicates the activity to Minister of Sports Francisco Camacho for his support and to the riders of the province of Monseñor Nouel (Bonao), the special guests for this year’s event.

Organizer Gonzalez says the event is also dedicated to three outstanding contemporary women horseriders: Josefina Valdez, Adriana Gómez and Melissa Martínez.
