Assembling buses in the Dominican Republic?

Antonio Marte, the transportation czar who controls the National Confederation of Transportation Organizations (Conatra), and is the Santiago Rodríguez senator in the National Congress, told reporters late last week that President Luis Abinader is backing an initiative for the installation of a bus assembly plant in Santiago Rodriguez province.

According to Marte, the government has received several offers to install such a plant that would produce, according to Marte, buses for mass transit. Marte envisions branding the buses as “Sabaneta” for the province and that the buses can be also exported.

Marte noted that his organization, Conatra, would purchase as many as 8,000 units a year.

The factory, taking advantage of laws 28-01 and 23-12, would be located close to the mega port of Manzanillo, under development by the Abinader administration. Some 2,000 direct jobs would be created in the assembly plant.
