The entire country is sweltering under a sustained heat wave as spring gives way to summer and the situation worsens due to the passing Saharan Dust clouds.
The Ministry of Public Health reminds people to prevent dehydration and the effects of the intense heat. Onamet reports temperatures of 35C (95F) in the Cibao region and even higher in Greater Santo Domingo and the south. The Ministry of Public Health recommends using facial masks to avoid the health impact of the Saharan dust.
The National Meteorological Office (Onamet) recommends keeping houses as well-ventilated as possible and a shower before bed. During the day, it is vital to remain hydrated by drinking more water than usual.
Recommendations also call for avoiding going outdoors between 11am and 3pm, and wearing light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
While the forecasts call for some isolated showers, the heat will continue this coming week.
