Sports Minister Francisco Camacho announced the organizing of the 15th National Sports Games for 2024. The Games will be played in February 2024 in venues in three southern provinces — Azua, Peravia (Baní) and San Jose de Ocoa.
The Ministry of Sports is refurbishing sports installations in Peravia, Azua and San José de Ocoa provinces in time for the National Sports Games.
Camacho said that qualifiers for the National Sports Games would take place in 2023. Around 4,000 athletes are expected to participate.
“We are preparing for the celebration of these games, which are a celebration of Dominican youth,” Camacho stressed when interviewed by communicator George Rodriguez on the television program “Nosotros a las Ocho,” which is broadcast on Teleradio America.
Young people are the largest age group of voters in the Dominican Republic. The date coincides with the celebration of the municipal elections nationwide. It is also two months from the presidential and congressional elections in May 2024.
Minister Camacho said the funds to organize the National Games will be included in the 2024 National Budget. The government envisions constructing new venues in Azua.
The 14th National Sports Games took place in 2018 in Hermanas Mirabal province.
The National District has consistently won the National Games.
Sports Minister Camacho said the Presidency will be funding the organization of the first National Neighborhood Games in Greater Santo Domingo this 2023. “Everything is already set up, we only need to define the date, which should be between June and July when the kids (students) are on vacation,” he said.
He said the 178 neighborhoods of Greater Santo Domingo are going to be involved in the sports event. He said the event will incorporate traditional games such as that of the handkerchief, the plaquita and others.
In June-July 2023, the Dominican Republic is co-host for the Central American and Caribbean Games. Taekwondo, modern pentathlon, equestrian events, racketball, hockey on grass and skeet events will take place in the Dominican Republic as co-host to the El Salvador Central American and Caribbean Games.
