Forest fire fighters: Neglected heroes

They are the men who risk their lives to put out the fires in the forests. Yet, they are among the worst paid government workers. Listin Diario looks into the heroic commitment of the forest fire fighters in the Dominican Republic and their plight.

Drought, arson, negligence and damaging farm practices by Haitians and Dominicans has resulted in an increase in forest fires. The heat wave now affecting the Dominican Republic when summer has yet to begin is expected to bring more fires. As of April, 591 fires had been reported.
