Ministry of Environment takes steps to protect Dunes of Baní

The Ministry of Environment began on Wednesday, 10 May 2023 to demolish the illegal fences that surround the Dunes of Baní. Unscrupulous persons have been selling plots in the 25 square km protected area.

The Ministry of Environment reports that a team led by Ney Soto, head of the Ministry of Environment’s Protected Areas Department, was at the Dunes to put an end to the building of houses, sand extraction in Los Tumbaos, dune encroachment in the Salinas area, and deforestation in Las Calderas.

“Personally, I was here since early Monday [8 May 2023]. Our intervention today responds to a last survey of the situation of the dunes that we initiated in March, when we marked with closed signs some eight illegal constructions inside the protected area, because the Ministry of Environment has the determination to confront the situation, always within its legal framework,” said Soto.

The brigades of the Ministry of Environment and the National Environmental Protection Service (SENPA) announced more coming efforts to mitigate damage caused by crops such as lemons, milkweed, bananas, and corn within the protected area.
