The Ministry of Education (Minerd) detailed the many programs and training underway to confront student challenges such as teenage pregnancy, early unions and violence in public schools.

The director of Guidance and Psychology Department at the Ministry of Education, Francisca de la Cruz pointed out in a press release that the ministry employs around 10,000 psychologists and student guidance specialists.

De la Cruz says a Comprehensive Sex Education in Values Program is being implemented at all educational levels, working with families and students. She explained the program seeks to help students understand and control their emotions, making them aware of critical decisions they need to take for their health and formulation of a life project.

De la Cruz emphasized that the Minerd, with the support of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), carries out a program to prevent early unions and assist pregnant students.

For the next school year, a Vocational Guidance Strategy will be implemented at all educational levels, with emphasis on the high school level. According to De la Cruz, this strategy seeks to enable students to value themselves, their competencies, possibilities and challenges, to build and carry out a satisfactory life project, preventing various psychosocial risks. More than 7,000 educational counselors have been trained to implement these through various strategies.

She also mentioned the Culture of Peace program whose objective is to develop in the educational community skills and strategies that contribute to peaceful and harmonious coexistence, and establishment of healthy and respectful relationships, training them in conflict mediation tools, emotion regulation, positive discipline, among others.
