UASD gets abandoned hotel; could offer tourism classes in the future

The state university UASD, the largest university in the Dominican Republic, has been awarded an abandoned government hotel where it could offer careers in tourism for the first time.

The Ministry of Tourism’s Corporation for the Promotion of the Hotel Industry and Tourism Development (Corphotels) on 2 May 2023 authorized that a small hotel in Santa Cruz, eastern El Seibo province be turned into a business and tourism school. El Seibo is close to the new tourism destination, Miches. The hotel was build during the Dictator Trujillo era. The intention is that it be turned into a teaching hotel.

A report in El Dia says the project has no timeline or definition. “But for the moment there should be no illusions because the UASD actually receives nothing and hopefully, the government itself that hands over the hotel to it initiates the reconstruction,” writes reporter Miguel Febles when covering the allotment of the property to the UASD.

Febles is not optimistic this will be soon. He speculates this is an electoral year and government investments are going into the provinces with large populations, not the case in El Seibo.
