Long Night of Museums: 18 to 21 May 2023

This weekend is Long Night of Museums, an opportunity to visit exceptional museums and meet up with thousands of other culture-seeking people. Call your favorite museum to see if they are participating in the extended hours and are offering special activities throughout the weekend.

The government’s Museums Agency (Dirección General de Museos) organizes the event. Admission is free and there will be multiple cultural and recreational activities for the whole family, except for the museums of the Colonial City, which will only have extended hours and free admission.

Over the weekend of Friday, 19 May, Saturday, 20 May 2023, museums will be open from 10am to 10pm and on Sunday, 21 May 2023 from 10am to 6pm.

The Long Night of Museums actually kicks off early on Thursday, 18 May, International Museum Day, with a conference given by María Batlle, president of the Maria Batlle Foundation, who is Inclusion Advisor to the Mayor’s Office of the National District. The conference will take place at the auditorium of the Museum of Modern Art in Plaza de la Cultura at 11am. The title of the conference is “Accessible Museums.”

Batlle will share information on the international guidelines of the International Council of Museums, which this year has chosen the theme “Museums, sustainability and welfare” to raise awareness about the power of museums to contribute to inclusion and the sustainable development of peoples.

During the celebration of the Long Night of Museums, special extended hours have been arranged so that the public who cannot access the museums during non-conventional hours . Admission to the participating museums is be free of charge, with the added attraction of multiple cultural and recreational activities for the whole family. The exception this year are the museums of the Colonial City, that will only offer extended hours and free admission. The Colonial City is under major renovation works affecting its inner circulation and parking.

This year, many museums in the provinces are also participating.
