
The Patronato de Ayuda a Casos de Mujeres Maltratadas (Pacam) celebrated its 20th anniversary with an event at the Hotel Embajador on 16 May 2023 and reiterated its commitment to spreading a culture of peace amongst Dominican society. Pacam endeavors to raise awareness and prevent domestic and intimate partner violence. The entity provides psychological assistance to women victims of violence and their children.
The non-profit institution has provided psychotherapeutic assistance, family consultation and help in cases of gender violence to hundreds of families and beneficiaries.
In addition, the entity develops social intervention programs, such as educational talks in state institutions, high schools, schools and colleges.
In the professional field, Pacam conducts training courses, workshops, and recently focused its efforts on expanding the scientific evidence on domestic violence and the emotional impact of violence on women.
Pacam was founded in 2003 and was recognized through Presidential Decree No.993-03. In looking back, Pacam says it has impacted more than 200,000 people, an average of 10,000 people per year.
Pacam has also carried out research that has been reviewed in magazines in Argentina, Spain and the Dominican Republic, and has attracted participation in international and national forums.
In its 20-year trajectory, Pacam has received notable recognitions from institutions such as the Gender Equality Commission of the Judiciary, the Protection of Women Awards, Brugal Believes in its People and the distinction of being a transcendent work, granted by the Corripio Foundation.
The president of Pacam, Soraya Lara Caba, has been recognized by the Dominican College of Psychologists, the Subcommittee for Gender Equity of the Judicial Department of La Vega, Woman of the Year, awarded by the newspaper Diario Libre, Woman with Leadership by the Emerging Leadership Foundation, also, the Vega Real Cooperative, the Center for the Study of Caribbean Art and the Federation of Dominican Businesswomen International (FEM). Outstanding Leader Award in her area FEM.
