Ministry of Environment in the spotlight

Minister of Environment Miguel Ceara Hatton spoke of the official environmental conservation policies for Las Dunas, Los Haitises and Sierra de Bahoruco in an interview with Edith Febles and German Marte on El Dia TV program on Telesistema, Channel 11.

Listin Diario has been covering the unpunished theft of the sand from Las Dunas, and the constant concern of the people of the province of Peravia with the conservation of the natural attraction. “We have been intervening in Las Dunas de Baní for about a month,” said the minister. He said the Ministry will install a permanent surveillance on the road, in addition to three or four booths in the protected area.

The Minister spoke of the interventions his administration has carried out to eradicate environmental crimes in Las Dunas and in Los Haitises and the Sierra de Bahoruco National Park. The official highlighted the role played by academic organizations and environmental groups that watch over the preservation of natural resources.

El Dia reports on how the drought has increased environmental problems and calls for more government action against those that violate environmental law. The environmentalists criticized that the government compensate those that are evicted from protected areas as this serves as an incentive for others to do the same.

Edith Febles tells of actions at the Ministry of Environment under Ceara Hatton to deal with staff charging to expedite permits. She also tells of efforts of the Ministry of Environment now under Ceara Hatton to deal with journalists who were on the Ministry of Environment payroll to not talk bad about the Ministry and hundreds of people who were getting paid without work assignments by the Ministry.
