Over the years, the government has been authorizing better pensions for government workers and for a selection of persons, including journalists, creative artists, physicians, sports people, you name it. Diario Libre publishes a list of the handpicked 5,520 people the Abinader administration from March to April 2023 granted better retirement cushions from the government. The amounts are well beyond the usual pension for persons of their profession in the Social Security System.
Meanwhile, most people who retire today through the present government pension plan become aware that they got a bad deal. The actual retirement pay is a fraction of their past wages, and those who retire lose their medical insurance benefits.
Now, the legislators, who benefit from a very plush retirement plan not the one they passed for most people, are looking into how to help the rest of the people in the Dominican Republic. The efforts are done in a pre-electoral year.
