A plan to save Laguna Saladillo

Officials of the Ministry of Defense and from the Ministry of the Environment have agreed with conservationists on how to protect the marshlands/wetlands surrounding Laguna Saladillo up on the Haitian border in Montecristi. The focus of these efforts is the wall construction between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The fence going up to divide the two countries is being built right in this protected and vulnerable area of wetlands, mangroves and the lagoon.

On Saturday, the Ministry of Environment issued a note that says that an agreement had been reached with the Ministry of Defense. This agreement provides for a series of installations that would allow for the flow of water in and out of the wetlands and lagoon, all the while providing access for the required border patrols and environmental watch teams.

The document also provides for a new housing structure to provide shelter for the forest rangers, members of the Ministry of Defense, and the Specialized Corps for Frontier Security (Cesfront).

Because of damages being incurred by the construction of the wall in this protected area, the Ministry of the Environment had issued a “stop work” order for the border wall construction. With this agreement, construction can now resume.
