PC to tell who is who among political candidates

The coordinator of Citizen Participation, Lizzie Sánchez Padilla announced that the non-partisan civic movement will follow up on the pre-candidates and candidates of each party and of each level of the general elections in 2024. The objective is that citizens know the person’s background before they vote.

Citizen Participation is the local chapter of Transparency International The intention of the organization now is to raise red flags when the parties choose candidates based on the amount of money they have and not the worth of the candidates. Around five legislators are investigated on drug trafficking charges after they were elected in the 2020 elections.

“We are going to follow up on each one of the candidates closely and we are going to give the information… We are going to attempt, we are going to take the first steps so that the population knows who their candidates are,” said Sánchez Padilla during her participation in the program Reseñas, hosted by journalists Rafael Núñez and Adelaida Martínez on Channel 46.

The profiling will also tell citizens what their candidates have done for the citizens of their choice demarcation, both at the municipal and congressional levels throughout the country, in alliance with other institutions.

PC expects the oversight effort to educate voters and produce a better Congress. “It is an educational process, you do not often see the results at once, but we hope to have a better Congress. It is unbelievable that we have 16 congressmen in this Congress who are just seat owners and that really causes a lot of concern,” Sánchez Padilla complained.

After the 2020 general election, five members of Congress are investigated for money laundering or drug trafficking problems.

Sánchez Padilla spoke of PC expectations that the political parties allow democracy to work and the bases of the party be able to have more say in the choice of the candidates.

Municipal elections are scheduled for February 2024 and presidential and congressional elections for May 2024.
