Chamber of Deputies passes autism bill; moves to the Senate

Deputies voted favorably on a bill that provides financial assistance and services to around 200,000 families with children with autism. If the bill is passed in the Senate, the Dominican Republic will become the second country in Latin America to have a law of this kind.

The bill’s articles seek to regulate the attention, protection and effective inclusion in society of persons with autism spectrum disorder, through the protection and guarantee of their rights and the satisfaction of their needs.

The bill highlights that persons with ASD will have the right to receive early, specialized, accessible and non-judgmental diagnosis and evaluation, services with coverage within the government’s National Health Insurance (SeNaSa). The coverage will pay clinical consultations and specialized intervention therapies.

Senators Franklin Rodríguez, Dionis Sánchez and Ginette Bournigal de Jiménez presented the initiative.
