In 1957, a very young Jerry Lee Lewis recorded the rock and roll version of “Whole lotta shakin going on,” and this could be the theme song for the Dominican Republic, where there were 12,605 registered tremors that fell between 1 and 5 on the Richter scale over just four years.
There were even three quakes that went over 5 on that scale but fell short, thankfully, of hitting 6.
This information is in the recent bulletin on environmental statistics issued by the National Statistics Office (ONE).
In 2021 the National Seismological Institute registered 3,768 seismic events, an average of ten per day. The largest for that year were in Monseñor Nouel and Hato Mayor (4.8 and 4.7). However, 98.3% of all of the seismic events of 2021 were less than 4 on the Richter scale and rarely caused damage.
There are 14 active fault lines in the Dominican Republic, and according to the bulletin, seismic activities have increased over the years, going from just over 900 in 2017 and climbing to over 3,500 in 2021.
