Chiqui Vicioso publishes novel in Portuguese

Chiqui Vicioso, the author of the novel, is fifth from the left.

Dominican author, poet, playwright, columnist and essayist Scherezada (Chiqui) Vicioso was in Portugal recently for the launching of her novel Sireno in Portuguese (“Sereio”). The presentation was at the Dominican Embassy in Lisbon.

The event took place at the José Saramago Foundation in Lisbon, with welcoming remarks by the Dominican Ambassador Miguel Ángel Prestol, followed by the presentation and welcome by the widow of the Portuguese Nobel Prize winner, Spanish journalist Pilar del Río.

The activity was moderated by Colombian writer Lauren Mendieta, coordinator of the meetings of the Ibero-American Cultural Organization, which are held monthly at the Jose Saramago Foundation. The president of the foundation was present and ambassadors from Latin America, including Panama, Uruguay and Cuba, among others.

Pablo Ortiz, president of Editorial Patria of Puerto Rico, presented the novel. Ali Francis, Puerto Rican graphic artist explained her design of the cover of the book is based on a real drawing of two sirens made in 1523 by the Portuguese pilot Martin de Acosta, of the ship San Lazaro, under the command of Captain Hernando de Grijalva.

The plot of “Sereio” focuses on the participation of Brazilian military personnel in the April 1965 Civil War in the Dominican Republic.
