Presidency signs with AWS cloud services to improve cybersecurity

The government of the Dominican Republic and Amazon Web Services (AWS) signed a digital transformation, innovation and cybersecurity agreement involving using the AWS Outposts private cloud solution for government digital architecture.

The recently signed agreement includes a cybersecurity focus through the AWS Global Cyber Security Program.

The agreement was signed in Washington by Minister of the Presidency Joel Santos Echavarría and AWS public policy vice president Shannon Kellogg. AWS regional public sector head Andrés Tahta also participated.

Minister Santos Echavarría said that the Dominican government is exploring incorporating some of the AWS Outposts solutions to the Government Digital Architecture to strengthen the aspects of digital authentication. The government seeks to use Artificial Intelligence to improve public services and safeguard government data in a special computing environment using AWS Outposts technology, thus guaranteeing data sovereignty. AWS Outposts is deployed on-site, so data remains within the country.

Santos explained that the agreement will focus on the protection and defense against cyber threats in the country, which will strengthen the government’s productivity and service capacity through the AWS Global Cyber Security Program.

Minister Santos Echavarría was accompanied by the Vice Minister of Digital Agenda, José David Montilla. They explained this agreement strengthens the country’s cybersecurity capacities.

Andrés Tahta, director general for Latin America and the Caribbean at Amazon Web Services Public Sector (AWS), said: “This memorandum of understanding is another milestone and a reflection of our long-term commitment to the region, especially the Dominican Republic, to continue supporting its digital growth.”

He added: “At AWS we have been collaborating with the country for more than two years, with a commitment to provide training spaces for government officials to accelerate innovation and digitize citizen services through our deep set of tools and services and the highest security standards.”

Shannon Kellogg, vice president for Public Policy at AWS for the Americas, said that state digitization has become a fundamental pillar from AWS to help governments use the cloud to modernize their processes and develop skills of local human talent.
