Santo Domingo is a cohost of the 24th Central American and Caribbean Games taking place from the inauguration on 23 June to 8 July 2023. The co-host situation came about because Panama desisted from hosting the games in 2022. At last minute, El Salvador accepted to host the games with the back up of the Dominican Republic.

Santo Domingo hosted the 12th Central American and Caribbean Games in 1974. Santiago was the site for the 15th Central American and Caribbean Games in 1986.

The hosting of the Games in Santo Domingo has meant renovations at the local sports facilities. A new canoeing track is being installed and the Olympic Center pool is getting new digital clocks. Improvements have also been finalized for the Racquetball Pavilion at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. A new grass covering has been installed at the Parque del Este hockey field.

In an interview with EFE, Jose Monegro, president of the 24th Games and 25th organizing committees, highlighted Santo Domingo’s sports tourism potential and the country’s potential to attract athletes from countries where the weather does not let them train outdoors all year long.

“We want to add a leg to the industry, which is sports tourism. For example, field hockey is not widely practiced in the Dominican Republic; however, some European countries do, but for several months of the year they cannot practice it because of the weather. The Dominican Republic can become a regional center where these European countries can come here to play field hockey,” he said.
