Chris Dodd calls on DR to promote shared economic prosperity

Known as an expert on Latin America, Christopher Dodd spoke at the Business Future of the Americas conference about how the Dominican Republic and foster shared and sustainable economic prosperity to ensure that democracy delivers for the people. Dodd is the Special Presidential Advisor for the Americas for US President Joe Biden.

The business event took place on 15 June 2023 and was sponsored by the Latin American Chambers of Commerce Association. It is part of the 100th anniversary of American Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic celebrations.

“We are stronger acting together than alone, and the potential of our Americas is limitless,” proclaimed the former US legislator in his keynote speech.

Dodd cited major challenges facing the Americas as a region, including the energy transition to clean energy, access to high-quality financing, infrastructure development, the proper use of natural resources, the promotion of supply chains and access to technologies.

“Through their memberships in American Chambers of Commerce, we rely on their advice, ingenuity and business acumen to grow economic activity, investment and trade to strengthen our democratic ties, our shared prosperity, the availability of decent work and sustainable quality of life for the citizens of our Americas,” said Dodd.

At the event’s opening, AmChamDR President Edwin De los Santos said: “We are aware of the challenges we face and that is why the Business Future of the Americas conference is a key space to discuss and find solutions to today’s economic challenges. We will focus on issues of vital importance and look for innovative solutions that will boost the development of our economies”.

Dodd was introduced by Roberto Herrera, Amcham’s past president, who noted that “his participation brings a wealth of experience and dedication to this role, and what makes it exceptional is his commitment to Latin America.”

During his presentation, Dodd said that the US Treasury had invited the Dominican Republic in February 2023 to present an investment plan to access US$85 million in concessional financing to support the transition to clean energy.

In his decades as a dedicated public servant, starting as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic and through his time on the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, former Senator Dodd has built the trust with many of our partners in the Western Hemisphere.

During the Business Future of the Americas conference, the regional business representatives discussed nearshoring, rule of the law and electricity issues.
