Specialist in national security Carolina Ramirez explained on Esta Noche con Mariasela Channel 7 TV variety show the nuances of the recent clash between a Police patrol, the staff at the Higuey Police detachment and a prosecutor, Carla Morla Rodriguez. Carolina Ramirez explained that both the prosecutor and the police acted disrespectfully at both times, worsening the situation.
The prosecutor was stopped for transiting at around 11pm without a license plate, a traffic violation. She later drove the vehicle to the Police detachment, where things got worse for her, because she parked her vehicle in a prohibited area and refused to move the vehicle. The police of the detachment then forcibly took her keys to remove the vehicle from the spot and arrested her.
The prosecutor eventually went home last night after La Altagracia chief prosecutor Mercedes Santana showed up at the police detachment.
The Association of Prosecutors defended the prosecutor and maneuvered fast to get a judge to order the arrest of the staff at the Higuey police detachment. Modesto Castillo, president of the prosecutors association, said Morla Rodriguez was driving a vehicle without a license plate because it was used in two narcotics raids. Castillo said that Morla Rodriguez was driving to her home in Higuey. He said Morla Rodriguez drove to the detachment to look for protection and did not find it. He complained that instead of protecting the prosecutor, the police mistreated her.
“We are not going to allow cases like this to continue to happen; and this, that this was with a prosecutor, imagine what would happen with a common citizen,” said Castillo.
Attorney General Miriam German Brito has ordered an investigation.
The Police routinely filmed the situation so this could be used in their defense if necessary.
