Sargassum is a problem countries in the Caribbean nation need to find a solution for. Meanwhile, depending on the flow of sargassum, the seaweed may locate alongside beaches. There is no way to forecast this in advance. Hotels have been investing millions in keeping the beaches clean.
In a country that promises white sandy beaches, the presence of a blanket of brown, smelly seaweeds along kilometers and kilometers of beaches is not a welcome sight. Sargassum, a brown macroalgae, has appeared in quantities not seen in over five decades. As a result, the Punta Cana Group Foundation has proposed a public-private effort to find solutions to this pronounced problem.
Jake Kheel, the foundation’s vice-president, posted a video on YouTube explaining the issues and offering a few solutions. Authorities at local universities have also called out the need to find solutions, and the people at Punta Cana note that this is not just a Dominican problem, but rather one that involves the entire Caribbean. Kheel explains that for this reason, the foundation has issued a call for establishing a public-private alliance to establish a permanent fund that would investigate and attempt to find solutions for the problem of the sargassum on our shores.
