The economic importance of the Cibao

Capex is a center for innovation and training for business and industry, and their business luncheon last week hosted Celso Juan Marranzini, the head of the National Council of Private Business (Conep) as the keynote speaker. Marranzini told his audience a lot of what they already knew, but what is largely forgotten in the larger, national scheme of things: The 14 provinces of the Cibao region are vital to the nation’s economic success.

Marranzini pointed out that the Cibao generates one-third of the national GDP, and in recent years it has contributed 41% of the nation’s GDP growth. Not only that, but the area produces 50% of Dominican agricultural production, 40% of construction, 88% of its mining, 50% of all the industrial free zones, 38% of all industries, and with the increase in cruiser tourism, 34% of all tourism.

Capex president Miguel Lama (Mickey) commented that all of this was due to the very good connections by land, sea and air. He called for the Conep to create the necessary synergies between the different regions, allowing the Cibao to contribute even more to the national development strategy.
