Attorney General Miriam German Brito has ordered an investigation into the confusing incident of the clash between a Higuey prosecutor and police patrol and staff at a police detachment.
The prosecutor was at fault for circulating without a license plate; she also parked in a prohibited area at the Police detachment.
The police at the detachment forcibly removed her key when she refused to remove her vehicle that was parked in an entrance. The law mandates a fine.
The Association of Prosecutors complained and got a judge to order that the staff of the detachment be arrested.
For the Bar Association, the incident between the representative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the uniformed officers, demonstrates the institutional deterioration, the lack of authority and resources that affect the justice system.
For representatives of the non-partisan civic movement, Citizen Participation, no person is above the law, regardless of the position he/she holds in a state institution, after pointing out that the prosecutor Carol Morla Rodriguez incurred in several faults.
Both Participación Ciudadana and the Bar Association applauded that the arrest warrant issued on Friday, 16 June 2023 by the Permanent Attention Office of La Altagracia against the agents involved in the arrest of the prosecutor will not be executed until the investigations are completed.
The heated argument that went viral between the prosecutor and the police agents, took place on Thursday night in Higuey, when Morla Rodriguez was going home in a vehicle without a license plate, after participating in a raid. Several media services have been covering the clash.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the National Police are waiting for the designated committees to report the results of the investigations.
Attorney General German Brito ordered Inspector General of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Viterbo Cabral, and the head of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office of San Pedro de Macoris, Eudyce Fernandez, to investigate the incident between the prosecutor Carol Darisel Morla and the officers.
Also the director of the National Police, Major General Eduardo Alberto Then, instructed the internal control agencies of the Police to carry out an investigation into the incident with the prosecutor in Higuey.
