The judges of the First Collegiate Court of the National District sentenced five people to 30 and 15 years in prison and acquitted six others for the beating to death of 24-year old David de los Santos in the Naco detachment after he was detained in a Santo Domingo mall.
The three civilians sentenced to 30 years in jail are Santiago Mateo Victoriano, Jean Carlos Martínez Peña and Michael Pérez Ramos. They are accused of committing acts of torture and barbarism against the victim David de los Santos.
Police at the Naco detachment that evening were also sentenced to 15 years in jail. These are Police Second Lieutenant German Garcia de la Cruz and Corporal Alfonso Decena Hernandez. The judges of the First Collegiate Court proved that these recorded the moment when the inmates brutally beat 24-year old De los Santos and did nothing to defend him.
However, the judges acquitted Captain Domingo Alberto Rodriguez and Private Sari Manuel Gonzalez Garcia, after accepting evidence and testimonies presented by their defense that they were not in the detachment at the moment of the aggression against the victim. The family protested saying these were those who put De los Santos into the cell and said they would appeal the judges’ decision.
The four members of the private security of the aforementioned shopping mall were also discharged.
The reading of the full sentence is set for 11 July 2023.
