The coordinating judge of the Instruction Courts of the National District, Kenya Romero, ordered the arrest of the alleged neuroscientist Elizabeth Silverio. Silverio was arrested at her home in Prado Oriental and taken to the Palacio de la Justicia Ciudad Nueva jail to await her arraignment.
Silverio was not a public figure until Nuria Piera denounced the woman was posing as a health professional and autism specialist without having carried out university studies. Silverio founded the Kogland Center, where she treated children with autism. She displayed university titles from the University of West Indies, the University of Florida, and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, all fakes. The Kogland center was created in December 2021. She and her husband, Davis Baez Zorrilla, appear as the main partners. There have not been reports of his arrest nor investigation in the case nor his role in the business.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office called on the parents of the children treated by the alleged specialist at the Kogland Center for Neurocognitive and Psychopedagogic Therapies to become plaintiffs.
The Ministry of Public Health has filed a complaint against Silverio for violating Public Health Law 42-01, which requires a professional to have an exequatur to practice.
Nuria Piera revealed that Silverio had but a high school title from Antigua & Barbuda, but her grades were not good enough to get into community college on the island.
Silverio faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Silverio now denies she was practicing medicine or consulting with the children, saying she had an extensive staff with the right credentials and she was responsible for creating the program.
The Ministry of Public Health had requested the center shutdown after Silverio never presented the requested accreditations.
