A recognition to the Dominican Republic as an emerging center for new talent in soccer, the country will host the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
This is only the second time in history that a Caribbean nation has hosted a FIFA world event. This is the first time a FIFA World Cup will be played on Dominican soil.
The Assembly of the Council of the FIFA when meeting in Zurich took the decision that was announced on Friday, 23 June 2023. At the same meeting in Zurich the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced Indonesia as the host of the 2023 U-17 World Cup, replacing Peru.
The FIFA announcement really constitutes what might be called the “arrival” of the Dominican Republic on the world football (soccer) stage. With a successful professional league, well-trained lower division teams and participation in major tournaments and qualifiers, it seems that the DR is moving forward very well in the world’s greatest sports activity.
The event is part of a great push to convert the Dominican Republic into a central part of the sport in the Caribbean.
After a successful U-20 Women’s pre-world tournament in CONCACAF disputed during May in the DR, with matches at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo and the Pan-American Stadium in San Cristóbal, the country was voted to become the venue for the event that will take place in May 2024, coinciding with the general elections.
